It is very important to use safe products for your skin. What about ingredients made from petrochemical industry? There is a real controversy concerning them. I tell you why.
Mineral oil is derived from crude oil. It is produced through a long refining process to obtain purified ingredients. You find mineral oil under different names: paraffinium liquidum, petrolatum, parrafin, mineral oil, synthetic wax, cera microcristallina, ozokerite, petrolatum jelly, ceresin…You can see all these names on the INCI list (International Nomenclature of Cosmetics Ingredients) which gives the composition of a product.
Effect on your skin
Petroleum and mineral oil are occlusive agents. They do not penetrate the skin and will not nourish or hydrate it. They seal off the skin from air or water and do not allow anything to get in or out. They form an invisible film on the surface which blocks the skin respiration process.
Why using mineral oil?
Cosmetic industry uses mineral oil for its stability and and its cost-effective price. It is the cheapest ingredient in thz cosmetics industry.
What can be used instead?
Vegetal oils are the best option (sweet almond, castor oil, jojoba, argan, etc.) as well as shea butter, glycerin, plant-based or marine collagen, plant-based or animal-based hyaluronic acid…
Cosmetic products containing mineral oil
You find mineral oil in a huge number of cosmetics: cream, shower gel, lipstick, eye-shadows, hair care, foundation, lip care… Facial creams and dermatologic care from luxury brands often contain mineral oil.
Petrolatum and mineral oil have also a very bad environmental impact as they are not biodegradable. They might also have a negative effect on health.
I do not use mineral oil as it has no benefits for the skin and always prefer natural ingredients. Organic ones are my favorites but they are not indispensable. Even non-organic natural ingredients will always be better than oil-based ones !
